This chapter explores how historical re-enactments produce a space conducive to the (re)negotiation of local identities in places where the legacy of empire remains contested. Focusing on the author’s experience of attending the reenactment of the Battle of Solferino (1859) in 2017, this visual essay explores how altering landscape, the reenactment creates a space where to negotiate individual and collective identities. Through the productive frictions emerging from immediacy, the essay traces the possibilities for participants to lay claim to new identities exceeding narratives mediated by both imperial and national pasts.
